“Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”

Psalm 37:5, KJV

I’m still.

The room is silent—except for the steady ticking of a large clock on the wall above our sofa.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Tick-tock.

With each movement of the second hand, another moment slips away.

Gone. Never to return.

The temptation is to rise, to do something. I admonish myself for wasting time, and yet, to sit in quiet contemplation, savoring each second, seems so right.

Time flies is a translation of the old Latin phrase tempus fugit. It’s a poetic expression that captures the inevitable passing of time and the importance of enjoying the moment.

In today’s fast-paced, goal-oriented society, time does seem to fly. Times of stillness are rare. It’s easy for us to exchange truly valuable moments for those we perceive as more important. As we stand on the precipice of a new year, we can only hope and project what the days ahead will hold. Goal setting is a great motivator, but life will throw us a few curves.

Imagine attempting to put together a large jigsaw puzzle. You lay out all of the border pieces only to discover they don’t match the picture on the box lid. The puzzle’s frame is in place, but you have no clue how to fill the gaping hole in the middle. Which piece do you pick up next? Without an idea of what the finished picture looks like, it’s hard to know where to begin or how to complete it. We often try to assemble our lives only to find that they bear no resemblance to the ones God envisioned for us.

In 2020, let’s commit our moments to God and trust him to fill in the gaps. Our lives are no puzzle to Him. He is the author and the finisher of our days. He sees them from beginning to end and knows everything that falls in the middle. He will make our lives complete.

Slow down. Breathe. Spend quiet moments with the Father of time. Commit your way to him. Hand him the all the pieces of your life—yes, all of them—and watch him assemble something beautiful.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
