Tennessee author, Crickett Keeth was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. While in her twenties, her given name, Janene, fell by the wayside. Because she was “little and bouncy,” she reminded her fellow Campus Crusade for Christ staffers of Jiminy Cricket, and the nickname, Crickett, has followed her ever since.
After almost drowning when she was small, she remembers sitting up in bed in the middle of the night shortly afterward and saying to God, “You could have taken me home today, but you didn’t. You must have a purpose for me, and I don’t want to miss it.”
Eventually, God revealed her purpose—to encourage others to passionately pursue Jesus Christ—and doors began to open for her to write, teach, and disciple women. “While leading a small group Bible study in Dallas, I would add questions to help promote rich discussion. One day the group challenged me to write our next study, and that’s how my writing journey began.”
While Crickett attended Dallas Theological Seminary, her professor, Sandra Glahn read one of her papers and asked her if she’d ever considered writing for publication. She laughed, but Glahn believed she should write and encouraged her to co-author one of her Coffee Cup Bible study series with her. Co-authoring, Sumatra with the Seven Churches, with Glahn gave her the confidence she needed to keep writing.
Crickett’s first solo Bible study, By Faith Alone: A Study on the Characters of Hebrews 11, took her six months to write and was later published by an affiliate of Dallas Theological Seminary—Biblical Studies Press. It’s still available on Amazon today.
After her newest Bible study, On Bended Knee: Praying Like Prophets, Warriors, and Kings, received a number of publisher rejections, it finally received a “yes” last summer from Moody Publishers. Her in-depth Bible study on prayer releases this week on June 4th.
“I wrote this study because in my busyness, my prayers had become more rote than heartfelt. Prayer had become a ritual more than a relationship. As I studied the prayers of eight men and women in the Bible, God breathed fresh life into my prayer life. I’m praying for that same impact in the lives of others. I love encouraging women in their faith, and I pray God continues to open doors for my Bible studies to reach a broader audience. I’d love to keep writing and speaking. Most of all, I want to please God with how I live my life—doing the things he’s called me to and not being distracted by things He never intended for me to do.”
When asked what advice she would give to writers struggling with their first book, she said, “Don’t give up. If you believe God wants you to write a book, keep writing. And trust God to open the right doors in His perfect timing.”
